We truly appreciate you taking the time to consider adoption. Choosing to adopt doesn’t just change a dog’s life—it brings a loyal companion, unconditional love, and a whole lot of joy into your home. At Barktown Rescue, our goal is to make thoughtful, lasting matches that set both you and your future pet up for success.
Getting Started
The adoption process starts by filling out the online adoption application. All meet and greets are scheduled once we have an approved application. Submitting an application is in no way a commitment on your part or ours.
Our standard adoption fee includes:
✓ Spay/neuter
✓ Heartworm and fecal testing
✓ Up-to-date vaccinations
✓ All initial veterinary care needed to ensure your pets’s health
Pets listed on our site may currently be going through the adoption process, so we cannot guarantee availability.
You will be contacted by an adoption coordinator from Barktown Rescue within 1–2 business days to go over your application and schedule your meet and greet. (Please be patient as all our volunteers also have regular day jobs.)
What to Expect
A home visit may be required prior to adoption. This isn’t meant to be invasive—it’s simply an opportunity for us to:
✓ Ensure a safe and loving environment for the dog
✓ Help prepare you for a successful transition
✓ Answer questions and provide helpful pet education
We encourage all members of the household to be present so everyone feels confident and ready for this lifelong commitment.
Adoption Requirements
To ensure the best outcomes for our dogs, we may require:

Veterinarian references for past and current pets
(to confirm spay/neuter and up-to-date vaccinations) -
Landlord approval if you rent your home

Fence requirements for certain dogs based on temperament, behavior, or safety concerns
Please note: Barktown Rescue does not adopt dogs to live exclusively outdoors. Our dogs are accustomed to living inside as part of a family. In rare cases, exceptions may be made if it is truly in the dog’s best interest.
